Where is the Izmir Jewish Community Center located?

Situated in the vibrant Alsancak district, our state-of-the-art JCC serves as a central hub for our community. Its convenient location, just a short 10-minute ride from the old Jewish Quarter, ensures easy accessibility for our members. It is important to note that the JCC focuses primarily on serving our community's specific needs and does not currently host public events or provide visitor amenities such as exhibitions or cafeterias. Our priority is to create a welcoming and supportive environment for our members within the JCC facilities.

The Shaar HaShamayim Synagogue, located inside the JCC, showcases a contemporary architectural design as it was constructed alongside the JCC just a few years ago. This particular synagogue serves as the city's primary venue for regular services. On the other hand, the synagogues in the Kemeralti district and Bet Israel in the Karataş district are typically inactive during the summer season, and are primarily utilised for special occasions and Shabbat morning services throughout the rest of the year.

How can I attend a service at the Shaar HaShamayim Synagogue?

Currently, daily services and Shabbat services are held only at the Shaar HaShamayim Synagogue, located inside the JCC. All other synagogues remain closed for services until further notice.
To attend a service, it is best for you to contact the JCC administration beforehand and send them copies of your passport or identification. You can reach out to them by emailing info@izmirjcc.org. This step ensures that you have the necessary arrangements in place and helps facilitate a smooth process for attending the service.

Is it possible to get in touch with the Rabbi?

Currently, the Izmir community does not have a resident community rabbi. The community services are conducted by a dedicated group of cantors from Izmir and Istanbul, leading the congregation in worship and ensuring the continuity of religious traditions. For further information, please send an email to info@izmirjcc.org.

Is there a Kosher restaurant in Izmir?

At present, there are no operational Kosher restaurants or butchers in İzmir. However, in the Alsancak district, there is a small store where you can find a selection of frozen Kosher meat, cheese, wine, and other products. For more detailed information, please feel free to reach out via email at info@izmirjcc.org.

What is the size of the Jewish community in Izmir?

The Jewish community in Izmir comprises around 1200 individuals, predominantly of Sephardic descent. Like many other Jewish communities in Europe, it encounters challenges associated with an ageing population and a gradual decline in numbers.

Is there a Jewish school in Izmir?

The Jewish school in Izmir ceased its operations in the late 1990s, and since then, there has been no active Jewish school in the city. The school's closure has led to the development of alternative educational initiatives, such as our after-school programs, including the Sunday School and Youth Club, which strive to fulfil the educational needs of the community's children and teenagers.
